It's a bird... it's a plane...

Is it Superman? Superboy?

No, wait, it's.........
(Ben: Let me put on the rest of my gear first...)
Super Knight!!!
Superhero Ben is all suited up in his Superman PJ's, his favourite, but the night -- according to him -- is still young! And he's just getting ready to go
to bed save the day!
That was a few moons ago.
Ben's currently back to his old craze of soldiers, on top of wearing a few different hats -- usually whatever catches his fancy! Yesterday, back to school after the Spring Break, his teacher jotted down what he said was one of the (many) things he's told us he wants to be when he grows up:
"Do you know, my dad said I'm going to the army when we go
back to Singapore?"
Knight or solider, astronaut or firefighter, I do let Ben's pretend play guide our choice of library books, and the simple crafts we do at home once in a blue moon. Nothing fancy, and with some imagination, something as basic as kitchen rolls joined together can be a telescope, a firehose, or yes, even a lance for jousting! (Except that last option I rather not, because there's enough wrestling going on between the two brothers as it is).
The Bundle of EnergyNo doubt it's lots of fun with "Sir Never-A-Dull-Moment" day in day out! At the same time, it takes quite a lot to keep up with him!
Quite the bundle of energy Ben is, I've long given up trying to get him to nap, though I sometimes wonder if it's because he sleeps only just as much as his older brother Jon, that he melts down quite easily.
Yesterday alone, he didn't want to be buckled up for me to drive him back after school, and threw another tantrum when it was time for us to go fetch Jon. Then, at the library, he was playing hide-and-seek with (who else, but) me, among the maze of bookshelves!
These are the very things we are still working with Ben on -- to use words, not cry or whine. And that running amok in public places is something I've gone over and over again with him, besides other safety concerns. Also, simply, for him to just listen to mommy, and obey. His daddy seems to have it easier than me.
Is Ben testing my limits (more than ever, it seems), partly because he knows he won't stay the baby? He's regressed a bit, and we try not to make a big deal out of it. Other stuff, like him still needing a middle-of-the-night trip to the bathroom, is understandable. But there is also a second time he'll wake up, night after night, when he'll find his way -- without fail, never mind in a stupor, to snuggle with us in our bed! And we are just so worn out from a long day, to try and wean him off this. Not yet.
Of course, there are also nights when
both boys will find their way to mom and dad's room! And while we don't encourage them to come bunk in with us like this, I know our big babies won't stay little to want to have us around them all the time. So...
... especially on longer days when I've been given the "runaround" by my own children, I close one, no, both eyes... and try and go "night-night" earlier! ;p
Another of Ben's "Do You Know?" This was the other piece of note that came back from school yesterday. And I thought it was really funny...Ben: What I love most about school...I get to cut paper!Surely there's more to school than that. But it's true, give Ben a pair scissors and paper, used cereal boxes, egg trays, and just about anything, and he will snip away! So I do have to watch what he cuts!
P.S. If you think I'm the hovering mommy, I try not to be, and like to give my children room to grow. But lots more for me to learn in this area, and there is a fine line between caring and mollycoddling!
