Cool icicles!

Dec 07 v 074

After Chinese class today, Jon takes a moment to marvel at the icicles that have formed from some freezing rain, and let me "freeze the moment" (with these shots), before all the crystals melt away!

In the first two pictures, he's got his tongue stuck out... to get a taste of all the "icee" goodness?!

I always just love how the icicles, even in the absence of snow, paints a pretty wintry picture! That natural glow, the ice gives to the bare branches!

These pictures are taken near the school where Jon's weekly Chinese lessons are held. The parking situation is always so bad, I've recently switched to parking in the neighbouring housing estate instead. It's a walk down a hill to the school, but hey, it's not a bad view... not bad at all!

Weather we like it (or not)...
My understanding of extreme weather terminology, that coming from sunny Singapore, I didn't have to know before:

It's called freezing rain when the rain comes down as water, and freezing temperatures turn the rain into ice, hence the icicles.

It's sleet when the rain comes down as ice, and hail when it's ice pellets; anything bigger than pea-size is red alert! Icestorms can be really dangerous, not just for driving (because of the slippery roads), but also because of the possibility of power outages as a result of trees and branches heavy from ice, falling on electrical cables.

By now, we know too, that power outages are not the kind of thing you want, especially since it can take days, and up to more than a week (!), for power to be restored, given how extensive the situation can be.

Always keep our candles and torchlights (or it's flashlights, to the Americans) on standby!

I hate driving on wintery roads - I took my driving test on a winter's day after a 10inch snow fall!
Love your photos!

SAHM,
Thanks. Oh wow, you must have aced that driving test! The roads are so slippery from the freezing rain these few days, we have to drive carefully and give more time than normal to get to school (becoz of the backed up traffic).

Ling,
Hehe! All that ice is the closest we get to snow, for now, and hopefully there'll be snow coming up... and photos to share with you!

Your photos always look good! Must learn more to see how I can take better pix. Mine always look kinda drab... :-(

Nomadic Mom,
Thanks, and you take nice pictures too! As a rule of thumb, just click away, although sometimes it's hard to get a good shot when the lighting's not great, and I have that problem.
