As they grow

The other day, Ben brought home from school a green bean plant that had started out as a seed. He had helped water it, and observed its growth and development with pictures he drew in a growth journal.

In the same vein, as parents we do what we deem is best to nurture our children. And it's not just the key milestones we want to capture and savour, but also those everyday "Kodak" moments as well. Before the kids grow up too fast, too soon!

Now family life, as you know it, too, has its highs and lows -- the fun and laughter, and frustration and tears also. And every family has its own days that are plain crazy!

At the end of which, nothing like a good hug to make everything all better already. And for me also, telling those three little words to the people I love the most, and yes, it's especially nice to hear them say the very same thing to me (without any prompting, of course)!

Sunday, Mother's Day...
I woke up to more than just nice big hugs. My three guys' extra special ways of telling me, "I love you"! The husband included, who normally prefers for special days other than our boys' to be played down, and I wasn't expecting anything, really.

Jon had been hiding this lovely pot and heartfelt note every day since he brought them home from school, so as not to spoil the surprise for me!

And I believed him totally, when he told me how much work it was to get the paint on, without it dripping all over the place!

Ben's pretty flower painting came with strict instructions from the teacher for us mothers not to unwrap the packaging until Sunday!

And I too believed him, when he said he had no help brushing on the strokes. His teacher told me she had shown the 3- and 4-year-olds the basic techniques of cleaning and dabbing the brushes to change colours, and left the rest all up to them!

I have so much to thank God for, as a result of being on the mommy track! And now, with my growing belly, more so than I'd imagined!

It's no secret that recently, I wrote off a chapter of my life, when I said goodbye for good to my employer back home. That wasn't as easy as it looked though, knowing this move spelt "No turning back" (for now, at least). And to be honest, one part of me was pining to breathe PR work again -- that was my job for a decade, up till before we came here.

But we can't always have the best of both worlds. And with all due respect to working mothers (and I was proud to be one before), there's probably no more important job in the whole wide world than devoting ourselves to care for the kids, husband, and house, and whatever else we try and fit on our plates as at-home moms! Yeah?

That said, I know, too, there's a season for everything. And just as I treasure the lessons learnt and friendships with wonderful people at the workplace, I do what I can to give my best to the much I'm blessed with now.

And as we watch our children grow...

and learn to see the world through their eyes, isn't it to some extent, like us having a second go at childhood? Only, at the same time, how can we play our mentoring role, like Ben's teacher does hers so well -- to show our young ones the way, and yet always leave room for their own creativity and imagination to flourish?

Can we grow with them, as they grow?

On Mother's Day, too, it was a wonderful gesture on the part of the Chinese school to end the schoolyear with certificates and awards for all the students, to spur them on in their learning journey.

Jon came out tops among his classmates in an oral competition, and we're happy he's more interested in picking up Chinese now than in the beginning. I know there's more I should be doing to fuel my children's interest in our mother tongue, and it will really make this mom's day when they can eventually carry out a proper conversation in Mandarin!

Dear bp, I'm filled with envy to the brim when I saw your family picture... it makes me imagine how mine will look in future... =)

Does Jon actually have such a beautiful handwritting? Gorgeous!! I mean, for a young boy like him to write like that! Little Ben ain't losing out either in artistry! =D

Yes dear, you're right that we can't always have the best of both worlds, and there's a season for everything. I had better long bid my ' ladder ' dream goodbye and prepare myself for a faithful role at home.

Love your beautiful smile. May the Lord keep it that way, always. =) Hugs.

Ur 2 handsome boys r vy good in artwork. Well done to Jon for doing so well in Chinese. I'm sure if u converse more with them at home, they'll be fluent in no time.
Time flies n they grow up so fast. I consider us SAHMs to be vy lucky to be able to witness every step of their growth. They can drive us up the wall some days but it's all worth while, right? ;)

The craft was beautiful and it must have made you smile. The family photo is lovely too. Congrats to Jon for being the top in the oral competition. He made you proud, didn't he? Hope you would enjoy your days being a mother.

So sweet of your boys!!! I got zilch from mine. :-) Me jealous liow!!!!

Eh...have to say for a pregnant mom, you look good and glowing...Just the bump that indicates the baby growing in you. Me? Aiyo...think I looked like a cow when I was pregnant. The problem was that I thought I was mighty sexy. But I was so sensitive that no one told me otherwise. Only after I delivered, the truth came out from their mouths!!! Heee

Donno when my S2 can carry out a conversation in Mandarin. Don't even have to be fluent, I happy liow...

And kudos to you to be able to capture all the KODAK moments. ME ah...terrible lah. didn't charge camera...so not that many pics of S2's performance today.

Yes, we have the most noble of professions that is supposed to be paid $23000 a month here! (that's what a survey done in Singapore reckons SAHMs is worth monthly!) Unfortuntely I havent seen a cent of it. Guess our payment will come in the future.

So, glowing and growing, Mum, You look fantastic! Take care!

BP, You have been greatly blessed with such a lovely family. The painting's really beautiful and that photo of you and your boys - wow! I am quite speechless. Truly a picture that is heartwarming. Your investment in your family will show you that it has been a wise one through the many good 'fruits' that you share in your blog.

bp,

This is a very very nice and heartwarming piece. Sharing with you thee thoughts on Legacy -

What you leave behind
is not what is engraved
in stone monuments,
but what is woven
into the lives of others.
- Pericles

And you are woven such rich legacy of care and love and living life to the fullest into your loved ones and even your faraway friends!

God Bless.

That's a very lovely family portrait I would love to have for my own too. And the things your sons did, what can I say, very beautiful work.

Thanks everyone, for your really kind words and encouragement...

Stardust,
May our good Lord continue to bless you and yours over and above what you ask for!

Ling,
Love your theme! Keep enjoying all the precious, priceless moments with your children!

Slavemom,
*nod, nod* It's all worthwhile! And as you said, I really must try and speak more Mandarin to my boys, and not give up trying even when they don't understand me more than half the time!

Jo-N,
To be honest, actually I felt a bit "pai-seh" becoz some of Jon's classmates have non-Chinese parents, so in that sense he had an edge over them. Still, to his credit, he had put effort into practising the simple poem we picked out to recite, and that was what I wanted to encourage him to keep going, not the win per se.

Nomadic Mom,
Is it Mother's Day over your end, as I know some places may celebrate it on a different day? It was super nice of the boys' school to initiate the handmade gifts, and I just had to tell the teachers how much I appreciated their thoughtfulness! I will check out S2's pictures... I'm sure they are lovely!

Keeyit,
=)... especially when the boys are happy, so am I!

SAHM,
$23,000 a month?! Wow! You keep doing what you are best at!

Bkworm,
Bless your heart, dear, and keep sharing God's goodness in your life! I hope to always share from my heart as much as possible.

Yan,
And thanks to you for weaving so much in others' lives, continue to be the inspiration you are as your life is touched by God!

Gargies,
Blessings to you and your family too, more than you can imagine!

Hi Bp, I actually thought I left a message here yesterday.. now I remembered.. the page hanged and I had to close it without hitting the publish button! Aiyaaa

Anyway.. I was saying the same thing that Stardust was saying about Jon's handwriting.. so neat and beautiful. :)

You have lovely children, a beautiful family, truly blessed BP. And you look wonderfully pregnant now.. hahaha.. I meant it in a good way.. I mean, when I was pregnant, I looked like a beach whale.. but look at you..you look so slim!!

I know what you mean about wishing to hear your kids speak proper sentences in mandarin... I too wish for the same.. and I am so excited to hear Kelly speaking the language even though she does not speak it fluently yet.

Sting, Jomel,
Thanks. Jon's handwriting has improved from when he started learning cursive... wasn't too long ago when it was trying, trying to ask him to sit down and get the letters to go the right way. Thankfully, they eventually clicked.

Jomel,
Thanks for coming back to do an "encore"... been having the same page hanging problem, dunno why.

Hehe, still some way to go, and I do grow to quite big, if the last two times are good indication!

Yes, no need to be fluent, just want to hear them utter a sentence here and there, and I will be so happy! But I need to speak it more at home!
